    1. Cemetary - Smith Hill Tour

Started by St. Patrick’s parish on 10 acres in 1844, and closed in 1979, the cemetery on Dougls Avenue is now managed by the Diocese of Providence. It is the final resting place of 25000 people, though only 2800 of them are named on headstones. Many of the headstones tell the

story of “famine migrants” who came from Ireland, and note the parish and county left behind. The cemetery also conveys something of the history of the Catholic religious who came to serve Providence beginning in the middle of the 19th century.
