As one of the two original buildings on campus, Darcus Johnson Hall served as the first residence and dining hall. It housed 64 of the 150 students enrolled at the Normal School, along with President and Mrs. Burruss. It began housing classrooms in 1915, eventually becoming home to the history department after a major renovation in 1971. After another renovation completed in 2020, Darcus Johnson reopened to house the Department of Justice Studies.
The building is named in honor of Dr. Sheary Darcus Johnson (’70, ‘74M), JMU’s first Black student and graduate.
Study Spaces/Computer Labs:
Darcus Johnson Hall offers a student lounge in the basement with small tables and chairs to accommodate approximately 9 students. A few of the chairs have USB charging ports for electronics and there are also several wall outlets. A computer lab with natural light, printers, and 21 PCs, is available in room 1009 when it’s not reserved for a class. Learn more about the computer lab in Darcus Johnson 1009 or view its schedule.
