About
Powell Library opened in 1929 as one of the first four buildings on the Westwood campus. The beautifully restored building features a 63-foot-high interior dome supported on interlaced trusses with intricately painted ceiling panels. The octagonal tower resembles the Church of St. Sepolcro in Bologna, Italy, and the main entrance is based on the Church of San Zenove in Verona, Italy. Powell is home to some 200,000 volumes, more than 100 computer workstations and 800 seats for reading. Powell Library is named in honor of Lawrence Clark Powell, University Librarian and first dean of the School of Library Services, which later merged to become the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies.
