Constructed in 1940, Alden Memorial auditorium was a gift of the George I. Alden Trust. Alden was WPI's first professor of mechanical engineering and was known as an innovative educator and accomplished researcher in mechanics and hydraulics. He was also one of the founders of Norton Company in Worcester.
It was WPI's first auditorium. The main hall, used for lectures, performances, and other events, features massive ceiling beams and stained-glass window medallions illustrating American history and cultural pursuits. In 1992, the building was completely renovated to create a modern and attractive center for the performing arts. Here, WPI's many musical groups rehearse and perform. The lower level of Alden includes a recital hall, a computer music laboratory, private and group rehearsal facilities, and a music classroom.
