Originally a Spanish Mission, the Alamo was turned into a fort in the 1800s and was the site of the Battle of the Alamo. Though defeated at the Alamo, the battle rallied Texans and led to the defeat of the Mexican army at the battle of San Jacinto thus establishing Texas as independent from Mexico.
