James A. Beaver
A Bellefonte attorney who led the 148th Pa. Vol. Infantry Regiment in the Civil War, Beaver rose to the rank of brigadier general and lost a leg at the Battle of Reams Station. He chaired Penn State's Board of Trustees for 24 years, was governor of Pa. 1887-91, and later a justice of the State Superior Court. Popular with students, he secured state funds to improve Penn State's first football field, named in his honor, as is today's Beaver Stadium.
