Mount Nittany
Derives its name from a Native American word meaning single mountain. It has been part of Penn State tradition since the adoption of the Nittany Lion as the University’s mascot in 1904. Once eyed for its timber, the mountain came under the protection of the Lion’s Paw Alumni Association, which purchased 525 acres in 1945, a conservation effort that continues in partnership with the Mount Nittany Conservancy. This 1890s picture was taken from Old Main.
