Strong House was built for James Strong, the college’s president from 1870 to 1903. Strong reluctantly accepted the presidency at a time when the college (then called Northfield College) was in dire financial straits, and his early work was entirely focused on fundraising. On a fundraising trip to Boston in his first year, Strong’s carriage was struck by a train. He miraculously survived, and businessman William Carleton, with whom Strong had just met, was moved enough by the event to donate $50,000 (worth over $1.2 million in today’s currency). The college was renamed in his honor immediately.
