        Built in 1927
        Renovations in 1974, 1982, 2012
The first building on campus to be named after a member of the Carleton staff, Evans is named for Margaret J. Evans, who was a professor of English literature and dean of women from 1874 to 1908. Evans was built as a women’s dorm, and for decades its dining hall was open only to female students until the administration yielded to student pressure and began allowing mixed-gender dining in the mid-20th century. During World War II, it served temporarily as a men’s dorm due to extremely low male student enrollment. The ground floor of Evans also holds the oldest student-run pub in the entire United States: The Cave! One of the best spots on campus to enjoy live music, The Cave hosts both local and international artists as well as student bands and DJs.
