    1. Japanese Garden

Filled with beautiful landscaping and a calming energy, Carleton’s Japanese Garden—named Jō Ryō En, The Garden of Quiet Listening—is a great place to study, relax, or track the seasons. It was initiated by Bardwell Smith, who retired as John W. Nason Professor of Religion and Asian Studies, Emeritus in 1996. The garden’s design and construction was completed between 1974 and 1976 by Dr. David Slawson, who studied for two years in Kyoto with Kinsaku Nakane, one of Japan’s foremost garden designers. Slawson was assisted by Peter Smith and Marshall Gittler ’76.
