714 Evans Drive
Built in 1966, Cowling is one of multiple campus buildings designed by prominent 20th century architect Minoru Yamasaki. The building is named for Donald J. Cowling, president of Carleton from 1909 to 1945. Cowling assumed the office at just 29 years old and held it for 36 years, during which time Carleton’s academic reputation and stature grew significantly. At the time of his appointment, Cowling held more degrees from Yale University—a B.A., M.A., B.D., and Ph.D.—than any other living person.
Cowling Gym is used for basketball, floor hockey, volleyball, and badminton practices, and hosts pool facilities along with dance and aerobics studios. The building’s most popular use, however, is for Cowling Dances! Once every term, Carls pack into the gym for a fun night with student DJs.
