302 & 308 College Street North
Built in 1920
Renovations in 1978, 2002
Leighton is one of the main homes for the humanities at Carleton nowadays, but it was originally built with extensive laboratories for chemistry and geology—the building still boasts a chiseled “Leighton Hall of Chemistry” above the entrance. In the mid-to-late 1920s, the 4th floor also housed Carleton’s short-lived Department of Home Economics. Classroom spaces were fitted with stoves and ovens so students could be taught cooking and nutrition. The major and minor were meant for those interested in becoming dietitians or teachers, or anyone who desired “the basic information necessary for further study of nutrition, costume design, and interior decoration.” Leighton is also built into a hill, so make sure to pay attention to the floor you’re on—if you enter through the front door facing the Bald Spot, you’ll start on Floor 2!
