The Sayles-Hill Campus Center—just “Sayles” to most—is Carleton’s center for everyday student life. It hosts a large cafe with many dining options, the campus bookstore, student mailboxes and the post office, various classrooms and meeting rooms, and comfortable spots for socializing with cushy couches, pool and foosball tables, and TVs. Sayles is also part of The Complex, a collection of connected buildings made up of it and residence halls Davis, Burton, and Severance (aka Sevy). Sayles is home to a fun Carleton tradition, too: Every Friday, a local florist sets up shop in the Great Space (the main open area) and sells small bouquets or individual flowers for a few dollars. Students can buy them, write a note on the attached card, and stick them in the mailbox of a friend! A great surprise for a Friday afternoon—or a slightly wilted one for a Monday morning, if you forgot to check your mail all weekend.
Sayles also formerly had a “Peter Tork Pinball Area,” named in honor of Monkees bassist and one-time Carleton student Peter Tork. The space was dedicated in 1980, in exchange for the return of a portrait of President James Strong that a group of students had stolen and replaced with a portrait of Elvis Presley the year before.
