    1. Skinner Memorial Chapel

      405 First Street East

      Built in 1917

The Chapel is where Carls and community members gather every Friday for Convocation (aka Convo), Carleton’s weekly lecture series that brings to campus fresh insights and perspectives from experts in a variety of fields, to stimulate thought and conversation on a wide range of subjects. From stand-up comedians to clean energy leaders to U.S. senators, Carleton has hosted all kinds! At the first and last convos of the year—Opening Convo in the fall and Honors Convo in the spring—senior students also bring some extra joy to the events by blowing bubbles from the balcony as faculty enter in their traditional procession.

The Chapel is also home to much of Carleton’s religious life on campus, hosting regular religious services in many different faiths and leading interfaith social justice meetings. Named after Miron W. Skinner, who served on the college’s first Board of Trustees, the Chapel was built facing south at the request of Skinner’s widow “as a symbol of the cordial relation between the college and Northfield.”
