Laird Stadium is quite a recognizable landmark for athletics at Carleton, especially football. The stadium’s Bob Sullivan Field, dedicated in October 2022, is named after the winning-est coach in Carleton Football history, who coached for 22 seasons starting in 1979 and took the program to new heights. In addition to an eight-lane, 400-meter all-weather track and field facility, the inside of the stadium also hosts weight, training, and locker rooms; indoor training space for Carleton’s men’s and women’s golf programs; and office and meeting space for coaches and other athletics staff.

Dwight Eisenhower made a campaign speech at Laird Stadium on Sept. 16, 1952, and posed for photos with then-President Gould. Until his visit, the stadium had never actually been filled, and there had been complaints that there were too many seats for a college of Carleton’s size—7,500 to be exact, still one of the largest DIII stadiums in the country.
