320 Third Street E
Built in 1910. Renovations in 1934, 1954, 2011, 2017.
The Weitz is a huge interdisciplinary arts space that houses the 400-seat Kracum Performance Hall; a cinema; a performance theater; music practice rooms; the Perlman Teaching Museum; video production, dance, and teaching studios; classrooms and meeting rooms; offices; and the Weitz Café. Built on the site of the former Northfield Middle School, the construction of the Weitz incorporated many architectural elements from the original building. This is especially noticeable in the west-hand side of the Weitz’s exterior facing East 4th Street (which looks just like a classic entrance to a K-12 school), but the evidence is everywhere, from refurbished bleacher seats decorating the outside of the main elevator to the vintage wood railings in the back staircases. With an additional wing built in 2017 to house Carleton’s music program, the patchwork nature of the Weitz lends itself to a sometimes-confusing (but always charming) layout—check the floor plans if you find yourself getting lost!
