In Fall 2021, Gwyn Chilcoat ’24, Hikaru Hayakawa ’24 and Jayden Jogwe ’24 undertook an independent study designed to respectfully and collaboratively support the Stockbridge-Munsee Community. The course was a unique collaboration between students, Associate Professor of History Christine DeLucia, Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Native American and Indigenous Studies Margaux Kristjansson and Stockbridge-Munsee Tribal Historic Preservation Manager Bonney Hartley. The group researched Mohican history in Williamstown and surrounding areas, took field trips to tribal heritage sites, presented their findings to the Williamstown Rural Lands Foundation and developed policy proposals for improving Stockbridge-Munsee visibility on campus and furthering the relationship between the Tribe and College.
