During Winter Study, Stockbridge-Munsee Historic Preservation Office Intern Emily Kuwaye ’23 developed new interpretative panels for Cold Spring, a fresh water spring in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Williamstown Rural Lands, who currently manages Cold Spring, wanted the Stockbridge-Munsee Tribal Historic Preservation Office to help design these replacement panels because the previous signage did not include any mention of the Stockbridge-Munsee Community. Rather, the importance the old panel attributed to Cold Spring was solely a result of this water source being part of Williamstown’s first water infrastructure system. These new interpretative panels dedicate less than a quarter of its space to the spring’s history post-European contact. Rather, the rest of the space is dedicated to sharing about water’s past and continuing importance in Mohican culture, as well as how the Tribe continues to work throughout its homelands. These new interpretative panels are planned to be installed at Cold Spring later this spring.
