The Central Heating Plant (SCP) heats about 85% of the buildings on campus. In 2012, two natural gas boilers were installed to replace older, less efficient coal burning boilers, marking the last time that SDSU has burned coal as an energy source. Several forms of heat recovery systems were also installed at the plant to help reduce the amount of energy input the plant requires to produce steam.
