      Horse Chestnut   circa 1930
               Aesculus hippocastanum

Able to tolerate urban conditions, it is frequently planted along city streets. In spring, the tree produces magnificent, white, bell-shaped flowers covered in red and yellow markings. Native to the Balkans of southeastern Europe, the bark yields a black dye often used to stain silks and cottons.
