Furious Flower Poetry Center is housed in Cardinal House, originally named Roop House Alumni Office.
Furious Flower's home, Cardinal House, is one of several formerly private homes pressed into service by the university across the years. Over the years, as the campus and student enrollment expanded, the need for office space has often been met this way. Today the Cardinal House houses faculty offices.
The nation's first academic center for Black poetry, Furious Flower was established on the James Madison University campus to serve creative writers, literary and cultural scholars, and poetry lovers everywhere. The center is committed to ensuring the visibility, inclusion, and critical consideration of Black poets in American letters, as well as in the whole range of educational curricula.
Their programming seeks to cultivate an appreciation for poetry among students of all levels—from elementary to graduate school and beyond. In addition, Furious Flower seeks to support and promote Black poets at all stages of their careers and to preserve the history of Black poets for future generations. Built: 1966
