JMU's renown for its undergraduate research program led to the construction of the Physics/Chemistry Building. Designed to meet the needs of the physics and chemistry departments that had been somewhat crowded in Miller Hall for three decades, the new and larger facility offers state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment.
Study Spaces: The Physics and Chemistry building offers dedicated, safe study spaces for students majoring in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, or Astronomy:
- The first floor computer lab (room 1312) provides computers with printing access and is available to Chemistry and Biochemistry majors outside of scheduled class times, and by JACard swipe from 6am to 1am.
- The second floor offers a space for Physics & Astronomy majors that is accessible via JACard swipe. This space (room 2144) includes comfortable seating, a small kitchen area, chalkboard, computer access, and natural light from windows. The teaching lab spaces (rooms 2378 and 2286), which offer a combined total of 22 computers and printing capability, are also available to Physics & Astronomy Majors outside of scheduled lab times, and after hours via JACard swipe.
- The third floor study space (room 3144), for Chemistry and Biochemistry majors, offers couches, tables and computers for students to use. This is available 24/7 with JACard swipe access.

Accessible Entrance: Entrance facing Carrier Drive has a ramp with automatic door. The main and amphitheater side (i.e. opposite/non-street) entrances are zero-entry with automatic doors.
Access between buildings: ISAT, ENGEO, and the Physics/Chemistry Building are connected by interior ramps.
