M Trailhead
A hike to the M is a favorite Missoula outing and is often called the most popular hiking trail in Montana. The trailhead has bathrooms and a water fountain that are open seasonally. The trail traverses 11 switchbacks and rises 620 feet to reach the M.
Look for signage at the trailhead on native plants, closures in place and fire danger. Please observe all restrictions in place at the M Trailhead and on Mount Sentinel.
Parking Lot U is commonly used by hikers accessing the M Trailhead. Hikers without a University Permit or Day Pass must purchase hourly parking during normal business hours. It is not necessary to purchase hourly parking on weekends, before 7 a.m. or after 5 p.m. on weekdays, or on holidays.
