The Kent State College of Architecture and Environmental Design building is the result of the university’s transformational “Foundations of Excellence: Building the Future” initiative that involved the construction of dynamic new buildings and spaces. Its goal was to create the most outstanding academic experience for students, faculty, staff, alumni and the greater community. These initiatives are nowhere better demonstrated than in The John Elliot Center for Architecture and Environmental Design. The building, designed by Weiss/Manfredi, is the result of an international competition and has won numerous environmental and design awards. Just one visit will reveal how it supports our progressive academic mission and design excellence.
Labs and Design Innovation features include:
- Joseph F. Morbito Architecture Library
- The library contains approximately 14,000 books, including current print and online periodicals, a selection of maps and architectural drawings, and the Belden Brick Materials Library.
- NEDlab
- The mission of NEDlab is to conceive, develop and innovate novel ecological systems for the ultra-urban environment. Through processes of conceptualization, visualization, experimentation, implementation and assessment, students and faculty transfer ecological concepts, processes and theories into the built environment.
- RFAB
- The newly formed Robotic Fabrication Lab (RFAB) at CAED is investigating the emerging role of robotic fabrication devices in the future of the built environment. Located in the John Elliot Center for Architecture and Environmental Design, the lab features a six-axis robotic arm and several 3D printers.
- FabLAB
- The FabLAB mission is to provide a safe and reliable facility for research and exploration in design and fabrication processes using the inherent tools, materials, and technology. This lab includes:
- Wood Shop
- Metal Lab
- Additional Equipment Resources
- CAED Digital Lab
- The CAED Digital Lab is a collection of digital and online services for students of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design. Services include large format color plotting, self-service printing, computer labs, digital archiving, cloud rendering and more. Laser Cutting and 3D printing are now offered and maintained through the CAED FabLAB.
