HISTORY
The Worden School of Social Service was founded in 1942 as the first school of social work in Texas. It was created at the request of Bishop Robert E. Lucey who recognized the extreme need for social workers at that time. Sister Angelique Ayres, CDP, responded to his request and said, "We can do that. We will meet all requirements and Divine Providence will take care of whatever we need." In 1949, the name was changed to Worden School in honor of donor and university trustee A.H. "Mary" Worden.
