Breland Hall, originally designed to be a men's dormitory, is home to many departments in the School Arts and Sciences. The idea to create the building began in 1954 and construction was finished on September 1, 1956. The hall was named for the late Rufus Galloway Breland, Professor of English, 1925-28, and Head of the English Department from 1928 until the time of his death on December 27, 1940. In 1976, Breland Hall was remodeled at a cost of $1.9 million to accommodate the College of Arts and Sciences, offices, classrooms, Arts and Sciences Departments, and laboratories. In addition, Breland Hall also houses the college's academic advisors.
