The Upper Parade Ground—known simply as “the UP”—is the center of daily life for the Corps of Cadets. This is where cadets train, drill, and march, and where many of Norwich’s most important ceremonies take place. As you explore, please use the walkways and avoid stepping on the grass, as this space is actively used for training and tradition.
History: The Upper Parade Ground reflects Norwich’s resilience and military heritage. After a devastating fire destroyed the Old South Barracks in Norwich, Vermont, in 1866, the university relocated to Northfield and rebuilt from the ground up. Creating a parade ground was essential—but not easy. What is now a defining feature of campus was once a sloped hillside, carefully leveled to establish the ceremonial and training space that remains central to Norwich life today.
