    1. Alden Partridge Statue/Weintz Court Yard

Located in Weintz Courtyard at the heart of Norwich’s math and science complex, the statue of Captain Alden Partridge stands as a tribute to the university’s founder. Partridge’s vision of leadership, service, and practical education established Norwich as the first institution in the nation to teach civil engineering—and continues to shape the university today.

A popular campus landmark, the statue is known for a unique detail—its eyes appear to glow in the evening light. This effect comes from the use of a different stone for the eyes, adding to the character and mystique of this iconic figure. The surrounding courtyard serves as a gathering space and a connection point between academic disciplines.

History: Dedicated in 1955, the statue weighs 9 tons and stands more than 16 feet tall. It was later rededicated in 2009 to its original sculptor, Bruno Sarzanini. Weintz Courtyard, completed in 2007, is named for L. Fred Weintz Jr. ’47, a World War II veteran, investment banker, and longtime Norwich trustee.
