Sabine Field is home to Norwich’s varsity football, soccer, and lacrosse programs—and a central gathering place for campus tradition. One of its most iconic moments comes during Homecoming Weekend, when alumni return for the Alumni March On, parading onto the field alongside the Corps of Cadets. Following a major renovation in 2013, the stadium is now a modern, multi-sport, all-weather facility with lighting that supports competition and events year-round.
History: Sabine Field dates back more than a century, when Dr. George K. Sabine, Class of 1868, funded the purchase of the land in 1920. A Norwich graduate and longtime physician, Sabine played a key role in the university’s early development after its move to Northfield.
Dedicated in 1921 in memory of his son, the field originally featured a baseball diamond, track, and football gridiron—and even served as an ice rink in the winter. A $6 million renovation completed in 2013 transformed the space into today’s Haynes Family Stadium, named in honor of Trustee Emeritus Fred Haynes ’58 & H’02 and his wife, RoxAnn.
