Though founded in 1974, the Carolina Gay Association did not add the word “Lesbian” to its name until 1985. As shown in this issue of the newsletter Lambda , the name-change marked the increased awareness of female sexuality in the 1980s. The CGLA was instrumental in integrating LGBTQ+ studies into the UNC curriculum , culminating in the founding of the Sexuality Studies Program in 2004. Today, SASB South houses the UNC LGBTQ Center , founded in 2003.
