    1. College Gates

The College Gates, flanking what was once the northern border of campus at Sixth Street and College Avenue, were built in 1914 and designed by Myron Hunt, who also designed the campus plan.

The inscriptions, written by then President James Blaisdell, have become guiding principles for students, alumni, faculty and staff. Upon entering (as our first-year class celebratorily does on Orientation Day), one sees: "Let only the eager, thoughtful and reverent enter here." Upon leaving, "They only are loyal to this college who departing bear their added riches in trust for mankind."
