Named for Helen Peabody in 1905, the first principal and teacher of the Western Female Seminary (1855-1888). Ms. Peabody was a graduate of Mount Holyoke for which Western College for Women was fashioned after.
The original building was built in 1855. Destroyed by fire in 1860 a new building opened on the same site in 1861. In 1871 it again was damaged by a fire but was rebuilt the same year.
