When the building's first wing was completed in 1957 it was known as Center Hall. Upon completion of the remainder of the building in 1961 it was renamed MacCracken Hall after Henry Mitchell MacCracken, an 1857 graduate, Presbyterian minister, chancellor of both the Western University of Pennsylvania (now the University of Pittsburgh) and of New York University. He also helped to establish the College of Wooster.
