Originally called New Mens Dormitory #1, the building was renamed for Judge John Cleves Symmes in 1949. Symmes was a pioneer of southwestern Ohio in the late 1700's. Judge Symmes had been chief justice of New Jersey and a member of the Continental Congress, and it was his contract with Congress for purchase of land between the two Miami Rivers, which eventually led to the founding of Miami University.
