Named for James McBride, the first Secretary to the Board of Trustees (1809-1820). He then became a Board member in 1820 and served until his death in 1859. During that time he served as President of the Board in 1842 and then again from 1852 to 1859. McBride was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1822 and was a Whig party leader.
