Named after John Shaw Billings, an 1857 graduate of Miami, a prominent Physician during the Civil War, Director of the Surgeon General's Library and the first Director of the New York Public Library. In 1895 Dr. Billings delivered the commencement address at his Alma Mater. The name was altered from Billings Natatorium to Billings Hall in 1994 when the Recreational Sports Center went into service and the facility was rehabilitated to house a chiller plant.
