Originally known as the Administration Building, then the Auditorium, the facility was named Benton Hall in 1926 for Guy Potter Benton (Miiami President 1902-1911). The name Benton Hall was moved to a new facility in 1968 and the building became Hall Auditorium, named for John W. Hall, Miami's 5th president (1854-1866).

Hall Auditorium is now the site for most of the Music Department's large concerts. With a seating capacity of 735 and a location just a block from "uptown" in Oxford, Hall is a convenient point of contact between Miami University performing artists and the public.

The Auditorium has hosted various speakers and performers including; Robert Frost, Frank Lloyd Wright, and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Hall was also used as a set for the movie "Ides of March" starring George Clooney and Ryan Gosling.
