Named for Margaret Evertson Phillips, Miami's Director of Physical Education for Women (1929-1963) in 1974. Prior to 1974 the building was named Herron Hall, after John W. Herron, class of 1845. Herron was a lawyer, a member of the Constitutional Convention of Ohio, State Senator, Miami Trustee and Board of Trustees President. He was largely instrumental in bringing about the reopening of Miami in 1885.
