Named for William Holmes McGuffey, Miami University's most famous faculty member (1826-1836). During his tenure at Miami, McGuffey authored the McGuffey Eclectic Readers, used to educate millions of children during the 1800's. McGuffey was also President of Cincinnati College (1836-1839), President of Ohio University (1839-1843), Professor of Moral Philosophy, University of Virginia (1845-1873).
Following the initial construction, the north wing was built in 1915, the center connector added in 1916, and the southeast wing built in 1925.
