Named for Samuel Spahr Laws, Miami's 1848 valedictorian, theologian, lawyer, physician, financier, college president, vice president of the New York Gold Exchange, and inventor of the Stock Market Ticker. Dr. Laws also employed Thomas A. Edison and presented to Miami University one of the five duplicate castings of the bronze Houdon statue of George Washington, which resides in the rotunda of Alumni Hall.
