      The central section of the Engineering Building was named in honor of Dr. James C. Garland, the 20th President of Miami University (1996-2006), The facility was built to accommodate expansion of Miami's engineering departments during Dr. Garland's tenure. The Engineering Building was built as a result of a master plan concept to develop a new academic quad that would provide space for the School of Engineering and Applied Science and improve access by various science departments to a consolidated laboratory support facility.
