Pocumtuck Buttonball Tree
Directly in front of the Main School Building stands one of the most remarkable trees in New England. It is an American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis), also known as a Buttonball due to its spherical seed clusters. The tree is estimated to be between 350 and 400 years old, likely predating European settlement of Deerfield. It reaches well over one hundred feet in height, and the circumference of its trunk is just over twenty-two feet.
