The Rock
The rocky summit of the Pocumtuck Ridge from which Edward Hitchcock contemplated New England’s ancient landscape is accessible to those up for a brisk hike. Pocumtuck Ridge runs roughly north-south, dividing the glacier-carved valleys of the Deerfield and Connecticut Rivers just to the south of the point where the two rivers merge. The best vantage point from which to see Deerfield Academy in context is known to students as “The Rock”.
