Named after Dr. Phillip R. Shriver in 1981, professor of History and Miami's 17th President (1965-1981). Dr. Shriver holds the record for the longest tenured University President (17 years) in the State of Ohio. At the time of its opening most institutions would have called this building the union building, Miami's Board of Trustees objected to any use of the word "union" so it became known as the University Center until being renamed in honor of Dr. Shriver.
