303 S. Patterson Ave., Oxford, OH 45056
National Registry & National Landmark in 1976
The house was built by Edward Root and sold to Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth in 1859. Langstroth was the inventor of the movable beehive frame that revolutionized the beekeeping industry. Upon his death, the house was purchased by Susan Peabody (niece of Helen Peabody), who gave it to Western College.
The oldest building on the Western College campus, it has served as a private home, faculty residence and residence for the Dean of Students. Threatened by destruction in 1977 when a site for Bachelor Hall was being selected, it was saved when the north entrance to Western campus was moved south. The building was acquired as part of Miami University's purchase of Western College in 1973.
