The Sunflower sculpture was created with 8 fabricators; one studio member, project manager Phil Gleason and a collection of 7 student interns throughout the spring semester 2019. The piece was created from Weathering Steel. At approximately 12’ tall the sunflowers were made from 14 ga. sheet metal welded to 3” pipe. The leaves were water jet cut at the materials research building then formed, welded, and assembled in our studio by this 7 member team of students throughout the semester. The sunflowers were meant as a focal point of the area and the centerpiece to the labyrinth, to create a space of relaxation and reflection.
