Figurative bronze sculpture by Melinda and Bob Copper
Albert A. Murphree, President, 1887-1927. Albert A. Murphree, a mathematician who joined the faculty in 1885 at age 25, served as president amidst a time of transition and reorganization in Florida. During President Murphree’s era, the institution was known by four different names. Historically called the Seminal West of Swannee River, the four year institution became Florida State College in 1901. The 1901 Buckman Bill and the switch to single-gender facilities changed the name to Florida Female College. Finally, in 1909, the Florida State College for Women was born.
