          Sir Harold W. Kroto is an English chemist who was awarded the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Robert Curl and Richard Smalley.  Kroto, Curl, and Smalley won the Nobel Prize for their discovery of fullerenes, often called buckyballs.  Kroto earned a first class bachelor of science honors degree in chemistry at the University of Sheffield in 1961 and his doctorate in 1964.  Kroto taught at the University of Sussex from 1967 until 2004, when he joined the faculty at Florida State University.  Kroto is currently teaching and continuing his research on fullerenes at FSU.
