UC San Diego Materials Support Services manages the handling and movement of material for the campus, including receipt and redistribution of incoming packages, office/lab moves, material storage, package shipment and the sale of used equipment through Surplus Sales.  From using all recycled and certified environmentally friendly packaging material to powering the entire building with a 266 kilowatt solar system, everything the department does incorporates sustainability. The building has a 250 kilowatt/500 kilowatt-hour energy storage system that helps reduce peak demand, while storing solar energy to help the building be a zero net energy facility.  The office also participates in UCSD’s Vehicle to Grid program, which allows parked electric vehicles to become part of the electric grid by allowing them to discharge their stored energy back into the grid, increasing the efficiency of the system.
