Built in 2006, the Forest Resources Building utilizes its 99,000 sq. ft. to house the School of Forest Resources, the PA Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, National Park Service, The Nature Conservancy, PA chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation, and the Sustainable Forests Partnership. Notably, the School is unique within Pennsylvania, representing the only professional education and research institution dedicated to the management of forest resources and their use by our society. The building, awarded the LEED Silver certification, exemplifies the School's commitment to promoting sustainability through the sustainable management of forest resources.
The building was designed to showcase Pennsylvania hardwood products. Exposed structural elements of the building such as beams, trusses, and columns demonstrate the use of wood and the beauty of natural elements. The green roof is a sedum meadow that provides food, shelter and habitat for organisms; specifically pollinators. The 4,700 sq. ft. roof contains a drain board making it a multicourse extensive system that can be observed from the wood-plastic composite patio during normal university hours. You can also appreciate the outdoor garden along the building that uses native vegetation and wooden furnishings.
